[SG EATS] Yellow Pot At Six Senses Singapore – Not Your Usual Chinese Menu On Health & Sustainability

0
0

Yellow Pot located at Six Senses Singapore is a modern Chinese restaurant and bar that stands out for its commitment to wellness and sustainability. The restaurant focuses on delivering classic and innovative Chinese cuisine that favours healthful, organic and sustainably-sourced ingredients, paired with artisanal cocktails crafted using traditional herbs and botanicals. Chef Sebastian Goh helms the restaurant’s well-balanced and sustainably driven Chinese culinary experience.

Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-1
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Interior
I was mesmerized with the beautiful settings of Yellow Pot when I first stepped in. I was welcomed with smiles. The restaurant and bar are designed with black, gold and yellow palette that acclaimed British designer Anouska Hempel. The 50-seat restaurant is embellished with yellow pots of various sizes and configurations.
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Table Setting
With eat well, feel better concept, let me share with you the dishes we tried that night.
Escape to Kaifeng S$22.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Cocktail
We kick start with the cocktail inspired by the flower of Kaifeng city made of house-made oriental chrysanthemum cordial and herbal Tangueray Gin. It was a potent drink as I can feel the kick aftermath.

Chilled Organic Vine-ripened Tomatoes S$8.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Tomatoes
Moving on is the appertizer- juicy and refreshing tomatoes infused with “Li Hing” plum and Farm Delight micro herbs. The tomatoes are peeled and soaked for 3 days to achieve the bursting flavours.

Seared Pork Cheek S$12.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road
Seared pork cheek served with cumin,chilli and topped with green mango salad that tasted like satay. That was our first reaction when we took the first bite.

Chicken Soup S$12.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Chicken Soup
Chicken soup served with shimeji-stuffed tomatoes. It was concentrated broth and comforting soup.

Hot & Sour Soup S$12.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Hot & Sour Soup
My foodie friend opt for hot and sour soup, which tasted mildly spicy. The broth is made from housemade hot bean paste and served with shredded chicken, wood ear mushrooms and enoki. Aromatic Sichuan chilli oil is added into it as well.

Roast Duck S$32.00++ (Half)
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Roast Duck
My favourite dish of all is this Roast Duck fermented with bean curd marinade. Then the duck is made to rest for 2 days before roasting. What amazed me is the crunchy and tangy skin and yet the duck meat tasted tender.

Wok-seared Organic Grass-Fed Beef Tenderloin S$36.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Beef
Beef cubes are prepared with crushed Tellicherry peppercorns, honey along with the crispy garlic and Himalayan salt. The wok-seared beef is cooked in medium-rare finish to achieve optimal for great taste and texture.

Braised White Cabbage S$12.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Braised Cabbage
The well-braised cabbage soaked with flavoursome chicken essence, conpoy and Shaoxing wine.

Braised Sweet & Sour Eggplant S$14.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Brinjal-1
Highly recommend dish to pair it with a bowl of white rice. The soya sauce is made from scratch and mixtures of assorted mushrooms are flavourful. And the best part is that the eggplant is a potent antioxidant that is good for health too.

Steamed Kuhlbarra Barramundi S$22.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Barammundi
Steamed fresh barramundi served with scallion-ginger pesto on top. Chef uses fish stock, fish bones and trimmings to steam the fish. Thus, this explains the flavoursome and sweetness taste of the fish. However, I personally feel that the price is bit steep with the portion served.

Stir-fried Mee Sua S$18.00++
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-Mee Sua
Tasty stir-fried mee sua cooked with prawn and Hokkaido scallops.

Lemongrass & Calamansi Jelly S$8.00++
Yellow Pot Restaurant Six Senses Duxton-Lemongrass Jelly Fruitsssert made with fresh fruits and calamansi jelly to end the sweet note of the night.
Yellow Pot Six Senses Duxton Road-2
I had a pleasant dinning experience with fellow foodies. I also gained insight on the restaurant’s direction to work towards balanced living and healthy eating. The restaurant also caters vegan dishes or accommodates specific dietary requirements. The foods here are priced slightly higher than typical Chinese restaurant. However, in line with Eat With Six Senses philosophy, the unhealthy additives such as flavour enhancers, lactose, gluten and sugars are largely avoided in favour of fresh, natural ingredients. Thus, this explains the cost of the ingredients, which plays a part on the pricing.

Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Café located at Wheelock Place for many years. I still remembered I visited the restaurant with my friends for dinner after work years back. The restaurant has been in Singapore for many years since 2005. Time flies but the restaurant still remained at the same location for years!I was invited to check out their latest 2018 grand menu few days back. So, let me move on to the dishes.

A platter of 7 chef-curated appetizers including grilled unagi with cream cheese, seared mini tuna steak with black pepper, grilled pork belly/ grilled chicken thigh, mini prawn sushi, crabmeat and asparagus with mentai sauce & refreshing pickled radish with yuzu and herring roe. Take your pick and my favourite is the crabmeat and asparagus with mentai sauce while the rest is addicted to the pickled radish with yuzu and herring roe.

Niku Atsu Hotate & Unagi Kamameshi S$26.80++
Sun with Moon Japanese Restaurant-2
Sun with Moon Japanese Restaurant-1
This is served with steamy iron pot topped with grilled unagi, thick-cut flame-seared scallops and Japanese rice. Mix them well before you enjoy it or try it with the soup broth for a different taste approach. This is quite comforting and filling for mains.

Beef Miso Dare Sukiyaki S$25.80++
Sun with Moon Japanese Restaurant-Beef Sukiyaki-1
Sun with Moon Japanese Restaurant-Beef Sukiyaki
The sukiyaki made with original miso dare blend with hatcho (soybean) miso from Okazaki in Aichi Prefecture. The US Ribeye beef cubes are soaked into the broth and served in hotpot to retain the flavours of the beef longer for your enjoyment. If you are a beef lover, try this!

Temari Sushi S$23.80++
Sun with Moon Japanese Restaurant-Mini Sushi Balls-1
Sun with Moon Japanese Restaurant-Mini Sushi Balls
Love the cute bite-sized mini sushi balls which reminds me of Malacca chicken rice balls. Hokkaido-Ya located at Vivocity Mall is a fast casual eatery serving Hokkaido-inspired dishes. Sushi Tei Pte Ltd is the team behind this new establishment. Hokkaido-Ya , which translates to Hokkaido-shop has an adorable mascot, Ezo modelled after ezo momonga (Japanese dwarf flying squirrel) sculpture in front of the shop entrance. Hokkaido-Ya
The restaurant installed self-ordering kiosks to streamline the ordering and payment process. There are two kiosks currently at the entrance of the shopfront where customers can complete the process.
Hokkaido-Ya-Seamless Payment-2
Hokkaido-Ya-Seamless Payment-1
The best part about the kiosks is the face detection function, where your image is stored in. So when you visit the restaurant for the next round, all you need to do is to click on the face recognition, the system will appear your previous orders for your reference. The system only requires customers to key in phone number only. So fret not of disclosing other personal information. There are two payment options to opt for. It is either cash payment at the counter or seamless payment (NETS or Credit Card).

I personally loved the Aburi Mentai Bara Chirashi Don especially the robust flavour from the flaming mentaiko sauce over the sashimi. The tempura crackers give the extra crunchy texture to the dish. If you want to skip carb, order the bara chirashi salad instead. As a whole, Hokkaido-Ya offers wallet-friendly prices and the ingredients used are fresh and sourced internationally.

[SG EATS] Bei-Ing Yun Tuen (Wonton) Noodles At Roxy Square Food Court

My friends and I visited Bei-ing Yun Tuen Noodles located at Roxy Square Food Court over the weekend to try out their noodles. As I am not familiar with the place, it took me a while to locate the stall. I went round and round the building until I found the stall. bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-1
The stall is located along with other stalls in air-conditioned space. As the seats are limited, chances you might need to share table with strangers.

Here are the noodles from the 35 years of tradition:
Wanton Noodles S$5.00
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-Hazeldiary-1
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-Hazeldiary
The QQ wanton noodles served with 2 wantons and fried wanton skin and caramelised charred char siew. The presentation is pretty innovative with black sweet sauce smeared on the plate like an art piece. Customers can opt for non-spicy or spicy noodles and I had mine without spicy. I enjoyed the springy texture of the noodles and the char siew is better than the usual ones I had.

Char Siew S$4.00 (Available in S$3.00, S$4.00 & S$5.00)
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-char siew
If you love the charred char siew, you can order it as side too! Love the sweet caramelised coated on the outer layer of the char siew.

Chicken Katsu S$5.00
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-chicken katsu
Chicken katsu served with truffle sauce by the side and served on bonito flakes. I would say the servings are generous with the price stated. However, I would prefer the bonito flakes to spread on top of the chicken katsu instead at the bottom of the chicken katsu. The reason being we do not really taste the bonito flakes until the last layer of the chicken katsu.

Fried Shrimp Dumplings S$4.00 (Available in S$4.00,S$5.00 & S$6.00)
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-fried shrimp dumplings
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-fried shrimp dumplings-1
Everyone enjoyed these crispy fried shrimp dumplings very much. This dish comes with truffle mayonnaise and chilli sauce.
bei-ing yun tuen wonton noodles-2
What makes the stall even interesting is the queue number system. Number will be given once the customer placed their order. Then, uncle will shout out the number with his loud and clear voice. You will never miss your number at all! It was a good breakfast on Sunday morning. All thanks to Eileen for extending the invite and also owner’s daughter for inviting us.

Such a cutie Mr Bump Knock-out made with fluffy fragrant butterfly pea flower coconut rice and ‘bandaged” with popiah skin, tempura sambal prawns, crispy golden fried chicken, crunchy walnut and anchovies. There are also keropok, potato croquette and ramen egg to complete the dish. I must say the crispy golden fried chicken tasted crunchy and tasty. Perhaps too much of rice but in order to achieve Mr Bump character in shape, it is unavoidable though.

[PRODUCT REVIEW] Gaston Luga Classy Mini Back Pack

0
0

Gaston Luga has launched Classy Mini backpacks series and I got one recently. My first Gaston Luga backpack was a year ago and I did write a post about it.This swedish Gaston Luga Back packs latest backpack release, Classy Mini is a cuter version of the Classy collection.Here is the description of the Classy Mini:
– Strong durable nylon
-Magnetic strap closure
-Light weight
-Water resistant
-1 larger inner pocket
-2 smaller inner pockets
-Adjustable shoulder straps
-Exchangeable flap top
Size of the bag: 20x30x7 cm , 4.2L

Weight: 350g
I love the quality of this mini backpack in black colour and it is easy to bring around on weekend outings. This backpack exudes Scandinavian minimalism and elegance and what make it even exclusive are the customisable flap top covers. I chose 1 black and 1 brown for the customisable flap top covers. The flap top is held to the backpack with a strong zipper and convenient to switch out.

Although it is mini-size bag, I still can fit quite a number of things in the bag including a foldable umbrella, camera, card holder, small wallet, keys and tissues. The bag material is made of a strong nylon and vegan leather for durability and water resistance. The inner lining is made of soft and luxurious 100% cotton fabric printed with Gaston Luga pattern. Thus, this explains the quality of the bag.

[JB EATS] Ho Seng Kee 何成記云吞面世家 – JB Famous Wanton Mee At Johor Bahru City Square Mall

0
0

Ho Seng Kee is known to be one of the best JB Wanton mee in Johor Bahru when you google online. Most Singaporeans will surely give this place a try when they are in Johor Bahru. Ho Seng Kee started off in the early 1940s and expanded to restaurant at City Square Mall, Johor Bahru. It is currently run by third generation.
Ho Seng Kee Johor Bahru-Wanton Mee- City square Mall-1
Their noodles are said to be freshly made daily with 100% egg based (Duck eggs and Chicken Eggs) and wheat flour. The noodles come with different sauces from original, spicy, black or soup form. We opt for the original version.

Ho Seng Kee Johor Bahru-Wanton Mee
Ho Seng Kee Johor Bahru-Wanton Mee-1
The wanton mee comes in .2 sizes – RM8.90 (~S$3.00) for medium bowl and RM13.90 (~S$4.71) for large bowl. Extra chilli sauce is available at the side and if you order dry version, they will serve with separate bowl of soup.
Ho Seng Kee Johor Bahru-Wanton Mee-3
The noodles texture is indeed springy and QQ but I personally think it does not have the ‘wow’ factor. I think my hometown noodles-叶芳面家 – Yap Fong Noodle House taste even better. The sauce here is lighter with the light soy, sesame oil and lard. Nevertheless, the overall taste is not bad with ingredients like minced pork, char siew and wantons.
Here is one with extra noodles shot that E ordered.
Ho Seng Kee Johor Bahru-Wanton Mee-2

Ho Seng Kee Johor Bahru-Wanton Mee- City square Mall
I would recommend here for those who comes in Johor Bahru for the first time. The reason being of the location conveniently located at the level 6 of the shopping mall and it is just a walking distance away from JB immigration. So, why not? There are many wanton noodles in Johor Bahru are pretty decent too!

[JB EATS] Restoran Ban Heong Seng (万香城 ) – Famous Beggar Chicken in Johor Bahru At Taman Impian Emas

0
0

Ban Heong Seng previously operating at an old single storey bungalow house located at Jalan Tahar has relocated at Taman Impian Emas about 2 years ago. Online reviews are mostly about their famous beggar chicken and their old place. There isn’t much information about their new location so I thought of sharing it here.Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas
Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas Johor Bahru-Interior
Reservation at least one day in advance is required. So, we called for reservation 1 day before we dropped by next day. The person-in-charge would request to confirm the dishes we want so that they can prepare in advance. He is kind enough to send me the menu so that I can finalize with my friends. The reason being is that the beggar chicken/ duck will need to take 6 hours to cook under the grounded charcoal and another 2 hours make sure the meat texture is soft and tender.
Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas Johor Bahru
HOW TO GET THERE
We took GRAB over and the fare is approximately RM32.00 ~S$10.85 for 6 seater GrabCar from a café in Taman Pelangi.Thus, if you are heading over from JB City Square, the fare should be around RM37 ~S$12.55 for 6 seater GrabCar.
Note:
1. The price for GrabCar is usually half-price of 6 seater GrabCar.
2. And we realized that 6 seater GrabCar is only available at town area. We tried to grab from the restaurant to our Airbnb but there is no availability. Thus, we booked 2 GrabCar instead.

Upon arrival, we informed the staff my name and he went ahead to prepare the dishes. I asked whether we are allowed to see where they prepare the beggar chicken and duck and he brought us back to the kitchen. There is a space/ partition next to the kitchen where the whole process is done.
Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas Johor Bahru-Back Kitchen

Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas Johor Bahru-Beggar Chicken

My foodie friends were awed by the preparation and everyone busy taking video. Here is one short clip from me too!

Here are the dishes we ordered:
Beggar Chicken RM60 ~S$20.34
Ban Heong Seng Beggar Chicken
Ban Heong Seng Beggar Chicken-1
The beggar chicken baked in the charcoal bed for about 8 hours. Thus, this explains why booking in advance is required. The process takes a long hours as the chicken is marinated with herbs wrapped in two layers of cake paper, a layer of thick brown grease proof paper and covered with red earth clay and left to cook in a grounded charcoal fired for hours. As they un-wrapped the chicken from the clay followed by the layers of paper, you can instantly smell of the aromatic herbs.
We opt for Kampong Chicken as it has less fat more meat. The chicken texture is tender and as you pull the chicken, you will see the herbs inside. Herbs include wolfberries, red dates, danggui and more many. The whole chicken tasted flavourful and satisfying.

Beggar Duck (叫化鸭) RM46.00 ~S$15.59
Ban Heong Seng Beggar Duck
Ban Heong Seng Beggar Duck-1
The process to prepare the Beggar Duck is same as Beggar Chicken and the duck meat is equivalently tender and flavourful too. Duck meat texture is usually tougher but not for this. Everyone enjoyed the duck with the overflowing savoury gravy.

Pork Belly (Pork Knuckle) ( 補佛手) RM38.00 ~S$12.88
Ban Heong Seng- Pork
The herbal keeps the flavours in balance for this dish with the soft and gelatinous skin.

Country Fish (家乡鱼) RM32.00~S$10.85
Ban Heong Seng- Fish Paste
This is rather interesting as the flesh is extracted and made into a paste. Then, it is stuffed back into the fish skin. Amazing on the skilfulness of the chef and it is served in fish shape and cut into fish cake style. Taste wise is not bad but I personally feel that it is a bit dry.

Melon Soup ( 冬瓜汤 )RM30.00~S$10.17
Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas- Melon Soup
Another signature dish to order is the melon soup served in a melon. The melon is steamed with the herbs like white fungus, red dates and many more together. The melon absorbs the essence of the herbal and the overall broth tasted sweet and comforting.

Tung Hoon RM12.00~S$4.07
Ban Heong Seng- Tung Hoon
We also ordered Tung Hoon to fill our stomach but we realized that the dishes were too filling after that. Thus, I would suggest coming in group to share calories together.

We also ordered a plate of vegetable dish to complete the meal.
Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas-Vegetables
Ban Heong Seng Taman Impian Emas Johor Bahru - 1
The total bill was RM251.00 ~S$85.08 inclusive of drinks and rice as well. My Singaporean friends felt that it is worth while with the amount of food we had. For those who are interested to give this place a try, remember to make one day reservation in advance.
Ban Heong Taman Impian Emas Johor Bahru
Oh ya… the area is not well located in GRAB app. Thus, it is advisable to ask the owner to share the pin location so that it is easier for you to locate it when you call for a GRAB services. If you are driving, please get the information from the owner as well!

[JB EATS] Restoran Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh (哥打正宗肉骨茶)At Taman Sentosa

Restoran Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh located at Taman Sentosa is somehow associated with Kiang Kee Bak Kut Teh. For those who are not familiar, Kiang Kee Bak Kut Teh is well-known family business bak kut teh near Kota Tinggi. It is owned by my secondary school friend’s father and I used to frequent the place.Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Taman Sentosa
The travel distance to Kiang Kee Bak Kut Te h is quite a distance and it takes approximately 1.5 – 2 hours drive from Johor Bahru and subject to traffic. Thus, some said Restoran Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh is the ideal alternative for those who lazy to travel far.
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong
And this restaurant is opened by Kiang Kee’s lady boss’ younger brother.
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Hazeldiary-2
We were there on a Sunday afternoon and we managed to secure a table before the crowd comes. We were given a queue number and the staff will allocate the table for us accordingly. So be sure you keep a lookout on the queue and follow order accordingly.

Here is a look at the menu.
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Hazeldiary-Menu
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Hazeldiary-Menu-1
We ordered the Bak Kut Teh and it is charged according to per person ( RM13.00 per pax ~S$4.41). We ordered 3 pax portions to share among 5 of us. For those who have not tried Kiang Kee Bak Kut Teh, you might find this is much better than the others in Johor Bahru. There is a distinctive aromatic herbal when it was served. The taste wise is flavourful but lack of depth flavour though. It is like one dimension taste though.
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Hazeldiary-1
But still, it is one of the better ones in Johor Bahru in terms of taste and overall selections. The ingredients used are same like the usual ones and you can select pork ribs, pork belly, pork tail or pork leg to add into your dish.

White Pepper Pig’s Maw Soup RM10.00per pax ~S$3.39
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-White Pepper Pig Maw Soup
We ordered one portion to try and it was ok only. It would be best if the peppery taste is stronger though.

Otah RM12.00 ~S$4.07
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Otah
The otah served is thicker than usual and you can taste more of the ground fish meat. Not quite a fan of this though.

Preserved vegetables RM3.00 ~S$1.02
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Preserved Vegetables
You Tiao RM4.00~S$1.36
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Youtiao
Fried Beancurd skin RM3.00~S$1.02
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Fried Beancurd Skin
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Hazeldiary-4
Our total bill RM97.00~ S$32.88 inclusive of drinks for 5 pax. The restaurant is located right opposite SK Sri Tebrau School and it is a one way road along Jalan Sutera. The place is packed with locals when we visited the place. If you asked me for bak kut te h recommendation in Johor Bahru, I would choose this over the overwhelming Restoran Soon Huat Bak Kut Te h at Taman Sentosa and Restoran Soon Soon Heng Bak Kut Te h located opposite KSL Shopping Mall. My favourites are still Kiang Kee Bak Kut Teh and Kulai’s Bak Kut Teh.
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Hazeldiary-3
Nevertheless, this is my personal preference. I grew up having herbal broth base and used to the old taste at kampong life.

[SG EATS] Plum & Toro At The InterContinental Singapore Robertson Quay – Modern Japanese Dining & Cocktail Restaurant & Bar

0
0

Plum and Toro is a modern Japanese dining and cocktail restaurant and bar located at level 2 of Intercontinental Singapore Robertson Quay. The restaurant is quite new around the area. And if you can find Wolfgang Steakhouse, you will find Plum & Toro because it is right opposite it.
Plum & Toro
It was my first visit to Plum & Toro with my friend last week courtesy of ChopeSG. The restaurant and bar offers bincho charcoal grilled, teppanyaki items and also seasonal items depending on sources what are shipped directly from Japan. They also offer a list of Japanese cocktails, rare sakes and fine wines.
Plum & Toro-2
Diners can sit at the bar counter to enjoy the cocktails before proceeding to the dining area. You can opt to sit at the counter seat to watch chef in action as well.
Plum & Toro-1
We started off with their signature cocktails- P&T and Kyoto 75 – S$22.00++ per glass. P&T cocktail is a combination of Umeshu (plum wine ), Shiso Liquer, Cointreau and Lemon while Kyoto 75 cocktail is a modern Japanese twist from the classic French 75, focusing on Kinobi Gin & Yuzu liquor and Prosecco. This is lighter in taste as compared with P&T.
Plum & Toro-3
Plum & Toro-4
Yaki Buta S$9.00++
Plum & Toro-Pork
Plum & Toro-Pork-1
Their signature pork belly wrapped with fluffy tamago (egg). The pork belly meat is cut into pieces in the inside and nicely wrapped over with tamago and drizzled with chef’s special sauce and Japanese chilli pepper to complete the flavour.

Wagyu Truffle Don S$40.00++

Grilled wagyu beef kiriotoshi served with onsen egg and topped with distinctive fresh truffle slices. Mix everything together and indulged the rich and tasty flavours. Umami!

Sakura Ebi Somen S$20.00++
Plum & Toro-Ebi Somen
Stir-fried cherry blossom shrimp packed with savoury flavour served with thin noodles (somen) tossed with scampi oil. This is one of the signature dishes here in Plum & Toro and we loved it.

Sakura Ebi S$18.00++
Plum & Toro-Ebi Fried Rice
Teppanyaki fried rice with cherry blossom shrimp and aonori.

Satsuma IMO S$15.00++
Plum & Toro-Dessert
Oven-baked Japanese sweet potato served with a scope of vanilla ice-cream topped with snow salt to end a sweet note for the night.
Plum & Toro-5
It was a cosy Wednesday night and the staffs are quite attentive to customers’ needs. They greeted everyone with a smile. If you are planning for a date, check out this place for a cosy, romantic night. They also offer affordable lunch menu if you are working nearby.

[M’SIA TRAVELS] 2D1N Weekend Food Guide To Johor Bahru

0
0

My foodie friends wanted to explore Johor Bahru (JB) over the weekend. Thus, we planned a weekend trip across the causeway a month ago. The reason being is that the train tickets are selling like hotcakes. We need to ensure that we are able to secure the train tickets back from Johor Bahru on Sunday evening.We didn’t plan the itinerary but we did list down the food places that we wanted to try. So, here is my 2D1N weekend JB guide suggestion including the previous food places I went.

HOW TO GET TO JOHOR BAHRU
Apart from taking Public Bus ( CW1, CW2, Bus 950 , 170 , 160 ) from designated location, you can purchase train tickets through online for both ways ( SG-JB , JB-SG). However, the tickets are selling like hotcakes and we couldn’t secure the tickets to JB. So, we travelled early Saturday morning and back by train.
You can book your train ticket thru KTM or Easybook. The train ticket fare (SG-JB) is S$5.00 and (JB-SG) is RM5.00.

HOW WE GET AROUND IN JB
We are travelling in group of 5 and I did not drive this time. Thus, we opt for GRAB services. GRAB provide GRABcar and 6-seater GRAB services, which is just perfect for us. Alternatively, you can opt to rent a car or take cab.
Note: Some of the places are not able to detect from the GRAB google map. Thus, it is better for you highlight this to your GRAB driver upon booking to avoid any misunderstanding. Alternatively, go to the respective restaurants/ cafes official website to click on their direction link for accuracy.

WHERE TO STAY

Junior Suite Room

You can opt for Airbnb or hotel stay depending on your budget and the places you want to explore. If you prefer to stay near to JB checkpoint, Doubletree by Hilton Johor Bahru, Amari Johor Bahru Hotel, The Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru Hotel or even The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen.
Otherwise, you can look for the Airbnb or hotels located further away from town area. For example, Holiday Villa Johor Bahru, Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel.

BREAKFAST PLACES
Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong-Bak Kut Teh-Hazeldiary
Apart from the famous Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and Jalan Dhoby traditional breakfast, you can consider to go for Bak Kut Te h or Roti Canai for breakfast. Most local breakfast places operate from 7:00am / 8:00am onwards so it is better to start your journey from Singapore earlier to brave the traffic and human jam.
Here are suggestions for breakfast place:
1. Restoran Hua Mui – traditional breakfast
2. Kin Wah Kopitiam – traditional breakfast
3. Roti Canai Bukit Chagar – Roti Canai
4. Restoran Kota Zheng Zhong –Bak Kut Teh
5. Kedai Masakan Itik Taika Huat 八里半大家发鸭肉
6. Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh – Bak Kut Teh
7. Restoran Soon Soon Heng -Bak Kut Teh
8. The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen – Western breakfast (open at 9:00AM)
9. The Faculty of Caffeine – Western breakfast (Open at 9:00AM)
10. Good Morning Food Truck – Taiwanese-style sandwich

LUNCH / DINNER PLACES
Ban Heong Taman Impian Emas Johor Bahru
These are the frequent places that I will visit whenever my foodie friends are in town. You can check them out as they are open for lunch and dinner. This is best when you travel in group because you get to try many dishes at one time go.
1. Restoran Ban Heong Seng – JB Famous Beggar Chicken (Order at least 1 day in advance)
2. Restoran Uncle Pou Wok– famous with Kampong Chicken, KL Hokkien Mee and zi char dishes
3. Restoran Kah Kah Loke– famous with the bitter gourd dishes
4. Restoran Todak Seafood– seafood dishes
5. TKK Seafood Restaurant– Seafood dishes

CAFES TO VISIT IN JB
I did a couple posts according the JB areas so you may want to click on below link for your reference 

Spring Labs Eco Summer JB
There are too many places to explore in Johor Bahru. It is more than a weekend gateway especially for foodies. So many places I have yet to try and revisit. I hope I can explore more places whenever I am back to JB over the weekend and if time permits. So, do share with me any interesting places you spotted! Till then…

[SG EATS] Scissors Paper Stove At Serangoon

Scissors Paper Stove is located within a 5-10minutes walk from NEX Mall. This newly opened restaurant offers Spanish tapas with Asian twist. I was invited for a food tasting session sometime back with foodie friends to check out the place.
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-1
The first impression when I reached the restaurant was vibrant and colourful. The whole place is decorated with colourful elements that certainly brighten up one’s mood upon stepping in.If I was not told that this is a restaurant, I will surely mistake it as a café because of the interior design and the colours used to decorate the place.
The menu is divided into few categories- tapas, mains, desserts and drinks. There are a total of 16 Tapas options in the menu and priced at 2 for S$40.00, 4 for S$36.00 and 6 for S$48.00. So generally speaking, the more you order, the more discount you get. So make sure you go in group to share this deal.

Here are the dishes we tried:
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Beef Skewer
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Iberico Pork Belly
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Lamb Skewer
We tried 4 tapas dishes which are served in colourful tingkats. The dishes include Iberico Pork Belly S$11.00, Lamb Kebab S$11.00, Beef Skewers S$11.00 and Grilled Squid S$11.50. My favourite was the Beef Skewers that uses rosemary to marinate and served with homemade Thai Chilli sauce. Their pork belly is rather unique as it uses Spanish style slow roasted method and served with coriander and ginger sauce and caramelised shallots.
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Grilled Squid
As for their Grilled Squid, it is marinated with garlic and served with coconut yogurt sauce and fennel salad. The coconut yogurt sauce is rather refreshing add flavour to the dish. And their sauces are made in house.

Moving on are their 2 mains that we tried:
Cartafata S$28.00
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Seabass
I would recommend you to order this to share with your dinner companion. We all loved it in terms of the portion, taste and presentation. Combination of seabass, tiger prawns, clams, mussels, lemongrass and tomato cooked in carta fata bag and served with Thai style yellow fried rice. The seabass is nicely cooked with moisture and tender. And the gravy is appetizing and best to go with a bowl of white rice. I would skip the Thai style yellow rice and go for white rice. It is definitely a worth one!

Paella S$20.00 for 1pax ( S$36.00 for 2 pax)
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Paella
Paella served with seafood, chicken, chorizo, bomba rice in lobster and saffron bisque. Not quite a fan of this dish but with assorted seafood and the price offered, it is quite decent though.

Coconut Ice-cream S$8.00
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Homemade Coconut Ice cream
We end our meal with homemade coconut ice-cream served with basil granite and chocolate soil.
We also tried their interesting concoction cocktails- Tak Kiu Peng S$12.00 (Vodka, Ameratto Milo and condensed milk) and Nin Jiom S$13.00 (Bourbon, Pi Pa Gao, Lemon Zest, Honey and Mint).
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Cocktail-1
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Cocktail
Apart from the menu dishes, Scissors Paper Stove also offers set lunch at S$12.00 ( S$10.00 for student) which includes 1 Soup of the Day/Salad + 1 Main + 1 Coffee/ Tea.
Scissors Paper Stove-Serangoon-Hazeldiary
One good thing about the restaurant is that the price is NETT. There is no additional service charge and GST. Although there are hits and misses here, I personally think it is a great place to hang out for those who are staying around that area. The price point is already quite attractive and the food and drinks are not bad as a whole. The restaurant also offers FREE Wifi services as well.

It has been 2 years since I last visited Goldleaf Restaurant located at Amoy Street. However, it has moved to Katong Square since then. To celebrate its 47th anniversary, Goldleaf has unveiled brand-new dishes as well as brought back long-lost classics. If you are familiar with the restaurant, you will know that Goldleaf was the first in Singapore to offer Taiwanese porridge in the country back in 1971.

[BKK TRAVELS] Weekend (2D1N) Guide in Bangkok

0
0

Bangkok, Thailand is known as Land of Smiles because Thais are generally smiling a lot. Bangkok is also one of the great cities that have diverse range of culture, shopping and great food. The best part is that that there is always cheap air ticket available from time to time. All you need is to keep a lookout on any promotions and deals.I am sharing how I utilise my weekend trip to Bangkok, Thailand. I will either take flight from Singapore to Bangkok on Friday night after work or early flight on Saturday morning since I am trying to save leave. My friends will meet me at Bangkok straight as they are taking Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok flights.

How to Travel Around in Bangkok
Bangkok Travel Guide-Hazeldiary
The mode of transportation will be their tuk-tuk, metro train, taxi or uber. The traffic can be very bad most of the time. So, I would suggest taking public transport and saving some money for shopping instead.

Where to Stay in Bangkok

There are quite a list of hostel, boutique hotels and luxury hotels to explore. It is all depends on your budget. Find the accommodation place near to the places you want to venture to save time as weekend is precious. I stayed at Doubletree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok before and I love the location of the place because it is just a walking distance from EmQuartier Shopping Center, Terminal 21 Shopping mall.

Breakfast
Either you enjoy hotel’s complimentary breakfast or head down to the streets for their local breakfast. Alternatively, check out On Lok Yun for their traditional and classic breakfast. On Lok Yun is located within Chinatown area and it is quite a distance away from BTS Station. I would suggest taking a cab to the location.
On Lok Yun
Address: 72 Charoen Krung Road, Talat Noi, Samphanthawong
Bangkok 10100
Opening Hours: Daily 5:30AM – 4:00PM

Lunch
Head over to Pratunam famous chicken rice shop – Kaithong Pratunam Chicken Rice (Go-Ang Kaomunkai Pratunam) for a lunch break after shopping spree at Platinum mall. Their Hainanese-style chicken rice is known as Khao Mun Gai is local’s all-time favourite foods. This famous chicken rice shop can be easily spotted with staffs decked in pink T-shirt and their bright pink signage.

Makkasan, Ratchawithi
Bangkok, Thailand
Opening Hours: 5:30AM – 3:00PM | 5:00PM – 2:00AM

Tea Break/ Café Visit
There are many interesting cafes in Bangkok and ever changing trending items. If you are a matcha lover just like me, I would recommend you to visit this hidden gem place called Peace Oriental Teahouse. It is few minutes walk away from Rocket Coffee Bar. You can hop two cafes at one area. The teahouse offers interesting matcha desserts and tea. There is an open counter where you can see the staff in action. The staffs here are well-equiped with art of tea and willing to share with customers.
和 ピース Peace – Oriental Teahouse

Bangkok, Thailand
Opening Hours:
Monday- Friday 7:00AM – 9:00PM
Saturday- Sunday 10:00AM-9:00PM

Dinner/ Supper
Having street food for dinner would be a great idea to have a taste of Thailand. Their traditional Thai delicacies including Pad Thai is available everywhere. You also get to experience eating at the roadside stall watching the street vendor cooking them up in front of your eyes.

Night/ Weekend Market
Bangkok Night Market
Bangkok is also known for its Night Market. There is quite a list of Night Markets to explore in Bangkok. The famous ones including Artbox, Asiatique The Riverfront, Rod Fai (Train Market) at Ratchada location and many more. Each night market has its own uniqueness. For example, Asiatique The Riverfront located along the famed Chao Praya River has an awesome view where tourists and locals can catch the sunset. There are plenty of hipster restaurants and bars to check out.
Another must mention market is Chatuchak. This is a must-visit place for first time visitor to Bangkok. This is the most visited market in Bangkok. Chatuchak opens every Friday evening and weekend.

Apart from shopping spree, these are the places that I would recommend you guys to explore and try out. If shopping is not your thing, visit their Thai Temple of the Golden Buddha. Weekend is forever seems to be short but a short weekend escape away is pretty much fun. I would do it again if there are good flight deals.

Chef Pang did it again! Chef Pang Kok Keong who is the Executive Chef/ Owner of Antoinette unveils new menu with a touch of European flair. I am so glad to be back again to check out the new savouries and brunch dishes for Antoinette’s 2018 menu mainstays.Here are the dishes we tried during the food tasting session:
Watermelon & Smoked Duck Salad S$24.00++
Antoinette-Watermelon & Duck Salad
Refreshing and fruity salad that comes with red and white sorgum, zucchini, lotus roots, edamame, broccoli, beetroot yoghurt dressing, mixed greens and egg that is boiled for 6 minutes to achieve the ozzing yolk. The watermelon is processed in two ways, which is compressed and pickled. The watermelon cubes are sous vide for firmer bite and a sweeter flavour.

Double Prawn Linguine S$26.00++
Antoinette-Double Prawn Linguine
The lobster is sautéed and deglazed with white wine and the linguine is prepared with prawn bisque and homemade spicy shrimp paste. The dish is finished with zucchini strips and garnished with ebiko, sakura ebi, nori and shiso cress for a cumulation of flavours. It is a luxurious and rich flavour dish not to miss!

Wagyu Beef Tagliatelle S$26.00++
Antoinette-Wagyu Beef Tagliatelle
The tagliatelle is made from scratch by Chef Pang using homemade whole wheat paste. The ragout is cooked with red wine, a medley of herbs and hunks of wagyu beef brisket. The dish is complete with onsen egg to be mix and coated with pasta before you take the first bite. Also, chef finished it off with grated parmesan cheese over the dish. Umami flavour indeed!

Baked Rigatoni S$8.00++
Antoinette-Baked Rigatoni
Comforting and satisfying rigatoni pasta sautéed in tomato cream sauce enlivened with chilli, white wine, onion and garlic. It is then topped with French Mornay sauce and layers of gruyere cheese and emmental cheese and then broiled for the golden brown crust. It is a tasty plate with the sweetness from the tomato cream and tint of spiciness from the chilli.

Black Bait S$12.00++
Antoinette-Black Bait
Addictive morsels of fish dusted with Whoppie Dust (homemade spice seasoning)- a blend of onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper and a sprinkle of raspberry powder and served with fried seaweed. The quinoa charcoal batter gives the whitebaits their bold colour.It is like a snack bites before the mains.

Moving on are Antoinette’s special concoctions that we tried. We ordered Blue Romance S$12.00++ comprising blue pea flower that lends its hue, peach puree, yuzu and topped up with sparkling soda, Grey Sky Dark Cloud S$10.00++-marriage of iced matcha, salty cheese foam and charcoal marshmallow resembling a dark cloud and Prescription S$14.00++ – combination of houjicha latte, Okinawan black sugar syrup, yuzu ice cubes and a pill sachet with fairy grass-grass jelly cubes.

It gives the “wow” factor as it is presented in its original state in cubes. The dessert comprises early grey chiffon cake layered with yuzu cream, fresh strawberries, rose petal foam, almond crumb, fresh watermelon and topped with watermelon kakigori (shaved ice).

Fondant au Chocolat S$14.00++

[SG EATS] Porta , Park Hotel Clark Quay x Ah Hua Kelong – 6 Course Marine Treasures Menu Experience

I am back to Porta again to try out the 2-day ONLY collaborative partnership event with Ah Hua Kelong fish farm. Ah Hua Kelong fish farm is a locally-farmed seafood and wholesaler that uses quality live baits to nurture the harvest naturally instead of employing today’s commercial short cuts with use of growth hormones and chemicals. To retain maximum freshness, the seafood is delivered on day as soon as it is harvested. They also arrange delivery to end user with a minimum purchase of $40.00.Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Park Hotel Clark Quay

Executive Chef Alvin Phan from Porta has specially curated this 6-course Marine Treasures using the fresh seafood from Ah Hua Kelong fish farm, which is available only for dinner session on 15 & 16 August 2018.

Let me take you to a seafood journey.
We started off with a basket of breads.
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Bread

Next, it is a surprise Amuse-Bouche– Crispy miso cracker with curry mayonnaise. We had crunchy crackers with cilantro in it followed by a dip of curry mayonnaise before putting it into your mouth. The curry mayonnaise flavour definitely perks up the taste buds.

XL Lokan Clams
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Clams
Palatable XL size Lokan clams with Thai basil, green chilli and lime that gives a taste of Thai flavours in it. The clam meats are huge and meaty!

Pearl Grouper
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Fish
We all went “mmmmmm..” after the first bite of the pearl grouper. It tasted so good even without the kombu. Chef completed the dish with baby spinach, shimeji mushroom and kombu to give a comforting Chinese cuisine after taste feel.

Green Lip Mussel
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Mussels
When it comes to mussels, I don’t really enjoy it because the mussels can be small and tasteless. But this Green Lip Mussel was awesome! The mussel is plump, firm and goes well with the red curry with coconut and lime sauce. The dish also comes with a mantou to dip with the sauce.

Sea Bass
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Seabass
Pan-fried seabass served along with Aubergina,Okra and spicy belachan shrimp paste was simply satisfying. We enjoyed the fish so much and it goes perfectly with the pungent and flavoured-packed spicy belachan shrimp paste. The paste makes everything taste so umami! Not to mention the fresh seabass was pleasantly firm in texture and meaty too.

Next we had the pre-dessert to cleanse our palate.
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Pre-dessert

And the dessert is served!
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Dessert
Raspberries sorbet with chocolate and salted caramel was okay but I would prefer the chocolate to be softer in texture though.

Petit Four
Porta x Ah Hua Kelong Fish Farm-Petit Four
Lastly, petit four is served to complete the whole dining experience.

The overall dining experience was awesome especially the mains. My foodie friends and I was amazed with the freshness of the fish and especially the mussels. Every taste was succulent and chef did a good job with the sauces. It did not overpower the taste of the seafood and it compliments well. Worth to check it out guys!

Senses Spa and Beauty located at 3rd floor of The Cathay offers soothing facial, treatments that will gives a wonders for your mind, body and soul. As I walked into the space, there are treatment rooms including couple rooms, spa faciliites and consultation rooms. There is a corner for customers to enjoy teas before the pampering session starts.Senses Spa The Cathay-Hazeldiary-1

Apart from that, Senses Spa also offers beauty treatments including eyebrow embroidery, eyelash extensions, body and facial waxing to slimming treatments. And the beauty products used are from Maria Galland and Skeyndor.

Senses Spa The Cathay-2
Before I start my 90 min Anti-Aging facial review, I was required to fill up my particulars and also highlight if there is any allergy issues. And of course I was served teas from the tea corner.

Senses Spa The Cathay
Senses Spa The Cathay-1
I was told that there are Himalayan salt lamps all over the corner of the place. The reason being is that the Himalayan salt lamps can enhance the flow of positive energy into our bodies and create a soothing and nurturing environment. Science now shows that heated salt has the therapeutic effect of releasing cleansed water vapour into the air.

Enough said… Let me share about my facial process. This facial does not include extraction. Here are the steps:
1. Double Cleansing
2. Exfloliation using scrub
3. Massaging the skin in circular motion with Venus Swan™ machine. This machine uses heat to boost collagen production and tone up the skin.
4. Neck and shoulder massage
5. Lastly, a mask to complete the facial.

The whole process was soothing and relaxing. However when the therapist started using the machine to massage my skin for the first time, I can feel the heat sensation on my skin that made me feel uncomfortable. But it was for few seconds and gradually I got comfortable with it. The Venus Swan™ machine delivers Multi-Polar Radiofrequency and Pulsed Magnetic Fields which penetrates deep into the skin to produce a dense and uniform heat. That is why there is a heat on the skin. The therapist will constantly check on the temperature of the device to ensure that it within the optimal temperature of about 39 degree Celsius.

This is how I looked like right after using the machine.

Note: If you are uncomfortable with the heat, inform the therapist and she will adjust it accordingly.

The result was immediate after the facial. The therapist also said that the effects are apparent on the third day after which you need to constantly apply facial masks for the first three days. But mine lasted for a week and I still feel that my cheeks are lifted up and have smoother skin.

So, what are the Benefits of the Treatment?
• fade fine lines
• diminish deep wrinkles
• tighten and tone aging skin
• restore smoother, younger-looking skin
• boost collagen production
This is right after my facial exploring Singapore with my friend.
